If you follow me on instagram then you may already know what that ‘thing’ is… recently I had my first injectables experience at Absolute Cosmetic Medicine. After the treatment I got a lot of questions about what I had done and what I thought of it all, so I wanted to share my experience and results with you guys today.
Just before I get started, I will say that I know this type of thing is not for everyone and some people may not agree with having these types of treatments done but for me personally it is something I have always been open to trying. Having had a lot of insecurities regarding certain parts of my appearance growing up, I am now at a point in my life where I am comfortable enough in my own skin and deciding to do something about the small areas I was still not happy about seemed like a smart thing to do! Also, I am turning 35 this year (eeeek!) and my fresh, smooth 20 year old skin is no longer a reality… more and more wrinkles had started to appear, especially around my eyes (all that damn laughing I do! hehe) so I thought it was time to tackle those too. And yes, I suppose I could try to be less superficial and worry less about my appearance but hey, the reality is that is probably never going to happen and I figure life is short so if there is something you can do that will make you happy then why not do it!!
Before the procedure:
Before deciding on who to trust with the very serious business of poking needles into my face (seriously though!), I did a lot of research on local cosmetic surgeries and finally decided to go with the team at Absolute Cosmetic Medicine. They have over 20 years of experience and are a very reputable name in the industry, they seemed to know their stuff and from all the reviews I could see had a LOT of very happy clients! They also have a great approach to ensuring their clients are in the right frame of mind when looking to get these procedures done and also they are big on natural and subtle improvements.. which is exactly what I was after! I also looked in to the type of procedures they offered and decided to tackle my two biggest areas of concern for me which was my small lips and my ageing skin.
On the day:
I was super nervous on the morning of the treatment, not knowing what to expect (and also being slightly petrified of needles will do that!!) As I mentioned previously I had decided to go with a lip filler treatment to make my lips slightly fuller and a wrinkle relaxer for my forehead and crow’s feet.
When I arrived the lovely ladies in reception took me through to meet with the Queen of injectables herself, Nurse Stephanie Murray. We had a chat about the procedures and why I wanted them done and Stephanie kindly explained (as I’m sure she has 1000 times before) that no, my lips were not going to look like Kylie Jenner’s after just one session, if ever!! While I came to terms with that depressing reality* she went through the procedures and what to expect afterwards. She explained the way the muscles in the face worked and the best spots to put the wrinkle relaxer to get optimal results based on how my face moved. When she had answered all my questions and listened to my scared whimpering in regards to having needles injected into my face (slight exaggeration..but not really!) we moved in to the treatment room. First up was the wrinkle relaxers, I had injections around my eyes and forehead and we were all done after about 10 mins. The injections were all relatively painless.. just a tiny sharp prick each time and that was it. So far, so good!
After the wrinkle relaxers we moved on to the lip fillers. I was given a dental block to numb the area as I was told the fillers were a bit more painful than the other injections. Being my first time, I was pretty happy with that as I didn’t really feel any of the injections apart from the ones in the very corner of my mouth and felt the pressure only when Stephanie massaged the filler in slightly. I did feel a little faint halfway through the procedure and we had to stop for a minute but it wasn’t due to the pain, I just forgot to relax and breathe for a while there! All in all it was not as scary as I imagined and the pain factor, while present, was fairly low.
*totally kidding guys.. I am not aiming to EVER look like a Kardashian/Jenner.. just an enhanced Emily will be fine for me!
Directly after the procedure:
Directly after my lip filler treatment my lips were very swollen and pouty, I applied ice on and off for the next few hours and as the dental block slowly wore off I did notice a bit of pain around my lips. I also had quite a big bruise and blood bruise develop on one side of my mouth and lip, which as I was informed in our initial consult was totally normal and to be expected in most cases. It hurt to touch for a couple of days afterwards and eating certain foods was a little uncomfortable due to the swelling and bruise. It took around a week for the bruise to completely disappear and the swelling to go down.
As for the wrinkle relaxers, there was no pain at all after the injections, I was informed that relaxers take up to 10 days to fully take affect so directly after the treatment there was not a lot of change from before the treatment.
There was little to no after care required for either treatment aside from taking it easy with any type of vigorous exercise for 24 hours and avoiding taking any blood thinning products such as aspirin or green tea (to avoid bruising) for a few days afterwards.
Two weeks later:
Honestly, I couldn’t be happier with the results!! After a week or so the wrinkle relaxers had fully taken affect and I was very impressed. The crow’s feet that were fairly prominent around my eyes had gone and my forehead was back to the smooth wrinkle free place it once was (you know.. a good few years ago now!)
My lips were noticeably bigger but subtle enough for it to not be too obvious that I had work done, which is exactly what I was hoping for! My side profile was one thing that bothered me the most, so I can not tell you how happy I am to have better lip to nose proportions!
I love that the results are so natural and I definitely still look like me.. the old way of thinking that having injectables means an obvious ‘plastic’ looking face is a thing of the past.. and when done correctly it can be the best thing ever! (Yep, I am clearly pretty happy with it!)
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away and I will happily answer them for you, or you can check out Absolute’s website for more info on fillers here and relaxers here.
