I admit it is one of those trends that can have people feeling slightly confused. Yes, they are both perfectly capable items on their own and no, they do not need each other in order to exist, but I kind of like the fact that wearing a dress over pants is a little unconventional.. plus why wouldn’t you want to extend the life of your dresses to all year round!
A couple of things I would consider when trying the trend (because unfortunately we can’t all be like style queen Margaret Zhang, who manages to pull off the dress over pants look EVERYSINGLETIME!!)
I think it’s important to keep the hemline of the dress uneven, either an asymmetrical cut or a side split would work, it just makes it a little less obvious that the dress is not really designed to go over pants. In saying that I would also stick to a looser/flowy style of dress too.
A fairly neutral colour palette for both the dress and the pants would work best also, the style is already going to be a bit of a statement so bright colours and patterns may be a bit too much.
Play around with different types of pants to see what suits you, a wide leg style can work just as well as a skin tight pair. It may take a bit of trial and error to find the style that works for you but that is part of the fun right?!
